The Department of Kannada Studies has a wide range of projects all oriented towards the preparation of reference material useful for both Kannadigas and non-Kannadigas besides teaching Kannada to non- Kannadigas and higher research.
The multi-volume Encyclopaedia of the Folk Culture of Karnataka is the first of its kind. It is intended to provide a comprehensive picutre of the folklore in Karnataka. The first volume contains introductory articles and the succeeding four volumes present the technical terms and phrases of Kannada folklore in the Kannada alphabetical order.
A Multilingual Dictionary (Kannada-Kannada-English-Tamil-Japanese) has Kannada for the source language, the other three being the languages used for explication. The aim of this Dictionary is to present a complete picture of the lexical corpus in the Kannada language. Tanjavur to Vijayarajagiridurga is a travelogue in Kannada printed from a palm-leaf manuscript. Edited with an introduction, Roman transliteration and English translation, the monograph is an invaluable document for scholars of onomastics and history. The Department is also guiding research scholars leading to Ph.D. degree in the comparative studies.
Dr. V. Gopalakrishna, is the Professor and Head of the Department of Kannada Studies. A post-graduate and a doctoral degree holder in Kannada of Bangalore University have studied Malayalam, Sanskrit, Telugu, Hindi and Tamil as well as English. Dr. Gopalakrishnan is currently guiding several research scholars to Ph.D. degree in comparative studies. He has translated several works from Malayalam to Kannada and vice-versa besides composing original scholarly works in Kannada. He edits the Lexicon and Encyclopaedia as well as manuscripts and commemprojects. |
